「なぜ、外国には寝たきり老人はいないのか？」

　答えはスウェーデンで見つかりました。今から５年前になりますが、認知症を専門にしている家内に引き連れられて、認知症専門医のアニカ・タクマン先生にストックホルム近郊の病院や老人介護施設を見学させていただきました。予想通り、寝たきり老人は１人もいませんでした。胃ろうの患者もいませんでした。

　その理由は、高齢あるいは、がんなどで終末期を迎えたら、口から食べられなくなるのは当たり前で、胃ろうや点滴などの人工栄養で延命を図ることは非倫理的であると、国民みんなが認識しているからでした。逆に、そんなことをするのは老人虐待という考え方さえあるそうです。
